What is ASTM A249 TP304L Tube?

ASTM A249 TP 304L tubes are welded austenitic stainless steel tubes used for heat exchanger, condenser, etc because of their high strength, corrosion and heat resistant properties. The code identifier TP304L means that the tube is made from from Type 304 stainless steel having a maximum carbon content of 0.03 % thus improving it intergranular corrosion resistance especially after welding.

This low-carbon characterises guarantees greater performance in applications that involve welding and where operating conditions involve high temperatures or corrosive agents. TP304L is resistant to oxidation pitting and crevices corrosion making it ideal for use in chemical processing,food and pharmaceutical industries and power stations. As for the materials used for the tube, it contains 18 – 20% of chromium and 8 – 12% of the nickel that gives it a strong feature of withstanding corrosive environment.

They also have good mechanical characteristics for TP304L tubes invariably features tensile strength ranging between 49700 to 55100 psi and minimum yield strength of 20500 psi. For this reason, they are commonly used in pressure containing as well as high temperature applications. Furthermore, these tubes may be welded with ease while they possess high resistance to cracking and hence suitable for use in long term use.
