What is ASTM A249 TP316L Tube?

ASTM A249 TP316L tubes are welded stainless steel tubes manufactured from stabilized Type 316L stainless steel, which offers a low carbon content to help combat weldability issues in high-service applications where flexibility, resistance to corrosion, and high temperature is paramount.

The ‘L’ in 316L stands for a maximum of 0.03% carbon content; they are resistant, which minimizes the chance of carbide formation during welding and makes the material resistant to intergranular corruption. TP316L consists of 16–18% more chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, which permits Tp316l to have good pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion resistance features by chloride in stringent settings such as marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical companies.

Higher molybdenum content in it also enhances the use in highly corrosive environments, such as sulfuric acid often encountered in chemical processing plants. TP316L tubes have very high tensile strength of 70,000–85,000 psi and high elongation to meet mechanical properties requirements for high pressure, high temperature applications.

Such tubes are commonly applied in heat exchangers, boilers, as well as condensers, and are used in the food and beverage industries and energy-related industries. They are easy to weld, possess good high-stress strength, and are well resistant to corrosion over extended periods and therefore, they are frequently used in structural activities.
