What is ASTM A268 Tubing?

ASTM A268 tubing entails ferritic stainless steel pipes for elevated temperature and sulfur/ chloride corrosion applications. This specification mainly concerns the specifications of steel tubes for use in heat exchange appliances, superheating appliances as well as chemical processing equipment. ASTM A268 tubing is provided in different grade such as TP409, TP430 and TP439 as well as with characteristic such as oxidation resistance and strength at high temperature etc.

These tubes are characterised by their excellent heat transfer co-efficient, weld ability, and strength. These are primarily used in such sectors like petrochemical, automobile, and especially power producing sectors where extreme conditions are encountered.

What is the Difference Between ASTM A268M Welded and Seamless Tubing?

ASTM A268M specifies that welded and seamless tubing may be made by either the seamless or welded process, but their application differs. Seamless tubing is obtained by passing steel through a die and using it to form a hollow shape with the help of a tube mill hence having no weld line. It showed enhanced strength and depth along with better uniformity and less likelihood of corrosion, and is thus suitable for high pressure and high-temperature applications.

In turn, welded tubing is made through the welding of a flat strip of steel into a tube that has a seam in view. Although not as strong as seamless tubing it is cheaper and can be used for lower pressure carrying capacity applications. Both grades meet ASTM A268M specifications and find application in chemical processing, heat exchangers and automotive applications.
