What is ASTM A269 TP317 Tube?

ASTM A269 TP317 tube is a stainless steel material that is manufactured as tubing from alloy 317, to perform perfectly in highly corrosive conditions. This specification applies to both seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubes which has mainly used in wide cross-section pipe for overall crippling resistance and excellent corrosive atmosphere. 316 stainless steel is also called UNS S31600, but Tp317 stainless steel is with better molybdenum than 316, it has better performance in corrosion resistance such as pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride corrosion in aggressive environments.

These tubes are used in industries like chemical & petrochemical, pharma, food processing and marine & offshore etc. They have good weldability, formability and are very strong and can be used in equipment’s such as heat exchanger, condenser and fluid transportation equipment’s. ASTM A269 TP317 tubes can be cited in variety of sizes and thickness to accommodate various industrial needs, to suit various types of applications.

How do I know if my SA 269 TP 317 Material is ERW or Seamless?

If you suspect that the material is either ERW or seamless for your SA 269 TP317 then you need to look at the shape and kind of the surface. ERW tubes have a weld line normally parallel to the tube axis while seamless tubes have no welded seam but instead will have a smooth circular profile all round the circumference. It can also be useful to check the cross section—it is possible to find an ERW tube has a weld bead inside.

It is possible to determine the production method by factory markings or certifications. Moreover, ERW tubes are characterized by closer tolerances than the WELD surfac. When it comes to positive identification, most customers should request a mill test certificate and consult their supplier, as it contains information on the material’s production process.
