What is ASTM A554 Grade 304 Tube?

ASTM A554 Grade 304 Tube describes welded stainless steel tubes produced mainly from Type 304 stainless steel which possesses austenitic microstructure. This grade possess high quality features such as rich corrosion forms, higher tensile strength and excellent weld ability that enable its use in many industries.

The ASTM A554 standard focuses only on welded tube profiles of round, square or rectangular for architectural, structural applications and ornamental purposes. The material used for these tubes is a Type 304 stainless steel with chromium/nickel ratio of 18-20%/8-10.5% respectively due to their excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

This makes ASTM A554 Grade 304 tubes suitable for usage in such areas where it is exposed to corrosive products such as food processing, chemical production and usage and any area near the seashore. They are also used in architectural applications like; handrails furniture and decorative due to their smooth finish.

Thus, apart from corrosion resistance, the major characteristic for which Type 304 is famous is its workability, as well as good tensile strength, that allows it to be formed into tubes with different diameters. These characteristics make the ASTM A554 Grade 304 tubes specifically suitable to perform in harsh conditions having their usage in automobile industries, food processing & beverage, pharmaceutical, and chemical sector.
