What is Passivated Stainless Steel Tubing?
Passivated Stainless Steel Tubing is exactly what the name suggests, That is, stainless steel tubing that has been processed with passivation to increase its corrosion protection ability. This process entails running the tubing through an acid bath usually nitric acid to help clean up the surface of free iron as well as other contaminants. What is the difference between Nitric and Citric Passivation?
Three submerged passivation procedure is the Nitric Passivation where stainless steel is immersed in nitric acid; a process that normally uses at least 20% – 30% nitric acid. This process re-moves loose iron particles on the surface and also strengthens the natural chromium oxide layer that provides optimum protection against corrosion that is especially useful in applications involving extremely strenuous chemical conditions. This method is popular in aerospace, the production of medicine and food industries.
Citric Passivation uses citric acid solution, making it less aggressive and friendly to the environment than the nitric acid used by other passivation processes. It is less aggressive, thus good for where less severe material treatment is required than for example in the production of medical equipment or in the food processing industry. Citric passivation also minimizes environmental pollution and is normally employed due to the non toxic nature of citric acid than other chemical solutions.
